Movie Reviews

Welcome to movie reviews

Well since I have no life, I watch every movie I can, in the theater and on satellite/cable TV. However, I have an opinion on everything I watch, which is why I started this Blog. In this web site, you will not only find my movie reviews, but many others who have decided to contribute their movie opinions. So feel welcome to add your comments/reviews.

The first question I have when I watch a movie for the first time, is what kind of reputation is this movie going to have:

  • excellent
  • above average
  • average
  • below average
  • terrible (stinks)

I’m sure we all can categorize every movie that we have ever seen. Also, we the public, pretty much determine how successful a new movie will be by way of “word-of-mouth.” Despite how much money a movie company will spend on advertising, despite what big name celebrities are starring in a new movie, it is always that 2nd week of the box office that tells all.

For those people who see a new movie release in the first week, it is those people who will make or break the movies success. Simply by bad mouthing a movie, it can drop the box office receipts like a rock.  For the next and coming weeks, no matter how much the movie studio spends on advertising, there will be a dramatic drop-off from attendance.

For example, when the movie Avatar came out, not only was I rating it in my mind as an excellent movie, I also brought 3 friends with me the following week, for me to see it again. Then those three friends liked Avatar so well, that they went to see it again the next week, and brought their friends to see it with them. Gee, it is no wonder that the movie broke all-time box office records!

The one thing I can’t stand is that Hollywood Academy Awards. Instead of listening to us, the viewing audience, and voting for Avatar to be the “Best Picture”, they instead choose to vote for the underdog. But then, who makes up the academy? Several thousand poor, starving entertainment people who are struggling to make a living in the entertainment industry. So who are they going to vote for? A very successful James Cameron and a very successful Fox movie? Of course not, they are going to vote for Cameron’s ex-wife who is like themselves, a struggling person trying to make it in the entertainment industry. So that is my reason for never paying attention to what the academy nominates and votes on.
